A STAR IS BORN
Let’s all give it up for Wande Coal, Nigeria’s musical icon who is blazing a trail worldwide. According to Babajidesalu and the 2009 year-end Google Zeitgeist, Wande Coal was the rave and had the greatest hits on Google. His “Bumper to Bumper” lyrics are just as irresistible as the “Ololufe” one making young and old jump on their feet to wriggle it out on the dance fl oor. Nigerians are gradually getting addicted with surfi ng the web for all kinds of information.
News Digest took a peep into the details of the searches especially from the entertainment angle. The result was surprising. Wande Coal topped the charts. Th e black ebony musical icon whose performance alongside D’banj is oft en very titillating is on many people’s mind. Youthful looks, healthy bone structure, sexy allure and a cool mien stand him out. His contemporary music and lyrics resonate across a broad audience. Among Nigerians, the search engine of choice is clearly GOOGLE. On a global scale, Wande Coal comes as a comfortable second aft er the world-famed Micheal Jackson.
He is the only Nigerian artiste that made the list of the fi rst top 10 names searched through Google on the net. Th e super stardom of United States President Barack Obama is again confi rmed. He came 10th in the run down, the only politician to make the list. For Wande Coal to have bested American superstars like Kanye West and Beyonce in the most searched artiste category is no mean fi t. It also shows that Nigerians are beginning to appreciate our own musical talents. For Wande Coal, the journey has only just begun, the race is not yet over.
