Olusoji Francis, a physically-challenged youth, defies his disability to contribute to society
By ‘JIDE IYANDA
At his duty post on WEMPCO Road, Ogba in Lagos, youthful Olusoji Francis awes many a motorist who drives past him as he controls traffic, sometimes under scorching sun. He makes wobbly, yet calculated gestures at oncoming vehicles to halt or move at the junction linking the Ogba Bus Stop, and the drivers obey his instructions. Olusoji, in his early 20s, suffers from Cerebral Palsy, a neurological disorder, also medically referred to as “motor impairment”, which affects a person’s ability to speak and walk properly, as well as maintain balance and posture. Not deterred by the encumbrance of his disability, Olusoji sweats it out daily from as early as 7am till nightfall, ensuring a smooth flow of traffic in the Ogba industrial neigbourhood. And in appreciation of his determination and sacrifice, many motorists often throw scribbled naira notes at the voluntary traffic controller. Little is known of Olusoji’s person — he was incoherent when News Digest interrupted him while he was controlling traffic on a hot afternoon. He tried mumbling some words and soon pointed at a carpenter’s shed across the road where a man volunteered to offer a few insights.

“He has been at this job for over a year now. He resumes here mostly by 7’o clock in the morning and leaves by dark,” said the artisan who simply referred to himself as Mr. Showemimo. So committed is Olusoji to the vocation, observes Showemimo, that on some days, he would still be on the road as late as 8pm and would only leave for home after being persuaded by him. “I often force him to leave before dark because some miscreants sometimes corner him to extort the money given to him b y motorists.
Some people dash him as much as N1,000, and he has used savings from such to improve his lot, because he looked very awful when he first started out here,” said the artisan. When it’s lunch time, Olusoji takes a break from his duty post, and relaxes under the carpenter’s shed to eat the food which his petty trader mom regularly brings for him. His parents have not objected to his controlling traffic on the road, in spite of his disability and the hazards the job poses to his safety. Olusoji’s selfless service has not only been noticed by the scores of appreciative motorists who have rewarded him with monetary gift. The Lagos State Government is said to be contemplating putting the physically-challenged youth on its payroll. |
